# Online Vocal Coaching for Worship Singers: What to Look For

By   Ashten Smith  ·   3 minute read

**The short answer:** Church worship singers find the right online vocal coaching by choosing a one-on-one coach who works on the demands of worship singing — vocal stamina across multiple services, microphone technique, blending and harmony, and singing comfortably in the keys your team uses — and by booking a trial or intro lesson before committing. Private lessons on Zoom work well for worship singers because you can bring the songs from your actual set list.

I'm Ashten, a classically trained soprano with a Master of Music and the founder of Sing With Ashten. I teach worship singers, choir members and hobbyists one-on-one over Zoom.

## What should worship singers work on in vocal lessons?

- **Stamina:** Singing through rehearsal and two or three services without your voice getting tired or hoarse
- **Breath support:** Sustaining long, held phrases and building choruses without pushing from the throat
- **Microphone technique:** How close to hold the mic, and how to adjust for soft and loud moments
- **Blending and harmony:** Hearing your part, matching vowels and volume, and staying on pitch next to other singers
- **Range and keys:** Finding keys that fit your voice, and singing higher notes without strain
- **Confidence:** Leading or singing in front of a congregation without nerves tightening your voice

## Why do worship singers get tired or hoarse on Sundays?

Most worship singers who struggle with fatigue aren't singing "wrong." They're singing a lot, often loudly, often early in the morning, and frequently in keys chosen for the worship leader rather than for them. Without steady breath support, the throat, jaw and neck tighten to compensate. In my studio I call this the breath → tension → pitch chain: shallow breath leads to tension, and tension makes pitch and stamina harder. Fix the breath first and the rest gets easier.

If you have hoarseness lasting more than two to three weeks, pain, or a sudden loss of voice, see an ear, nose and throat doctor or a voice-specialized speech-language pathologist before starting lessons.

## How do you find a personalized online vocal coach as a worship singer?

1. **Look for one-on-one lessons.** Group classes and apps can help with basics, but individual feedback is what fixes your specific habits.
2. **Check that the coach works with adults and non-professionals.** Many worship singers are volunteers, not aspiring recording artists.
3. **Ask if you can bring your set list.** Working on the actual songs you sing on Sunday makes lessons immediately useful.
4. **Book a trial or intro lesson first.** You'll learn quickly whether the coach explains things in a way that clicks for you.
5. **Ask about practice between lessons.** Good coaching includes exercises you can do in 10 to 20 minutes on your own.

## Questions to ask a vocal coach before booking

- Do you work with church worship or choir singers?
- Can we work on songs from my church's set list?
- How do you help singers build stamina for multiple services?
- Do you teach microphone technique and harmony singing?
- What will I practice between lessons?
- Do you offer a trial or intro lesson?

## How much do online voice lessons cost?

Private online voice lessons with a trained teacher in the U.S. typically run about $70 to $200 per hour, depending on the coach's training, experience and lesson format. Many coaches, including me, offer monthly plans so you get regular, consistent lessons instead of one-off sessions. - Write down what you want help with: range, pitch, stamina, confidence or blending

## Frequently asked questions

### Do worship singers need voice lessons?

You don't need lessons to serve, but lessons help you sing with less effort, stay healthy through busy seasons like Christmas and Easter, and feel more confident on stage.

### Can online vocal coaching help with harmonies?

Yes. A coach can help you hear and hold your part, match vowels with other singers, and stay on pitch, using the songs your team actually sings.

### Is a vocal coach the same as a voice teacher?

The terms overlap. A voice teacher usually focuses on technique and vocal health; a vocal coach often focuses on style and performance. Many worship singers benefit from someone who does both.
