## Sing the songs you love, without strain

Sing with Ashten offers private, one-on-one online voice lessons on Zoom for adult hobbyist singers who want to sing with healthy technique. Lessons are taught by Ashten Smith, a classically trained soprano with a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and over fifteen years of teaching experience, who keeps her methods grounded in current voice science.

For a hobbyist, vocal health means singing for as long as you want without your throat feeling tight, scratchy or tired afterward. Most strain in adult singers isn't a “bad voice.” It's tension doing the job breath should be doing, and that's a skill you can learn to change.

**Signs lessons can help:**

- Your throat feels tight, sore or tired after singing
- Your voice cracks or flips as you go higher
- You run out of air partway through phrases
- Your jaw, tongue, neck or shoulders tense up on high notes
- High notes feel like pushing or shouting

**How we work:** I teach the breath → tension → pitch chain. When breath support is shallow, the throat, jaw and tongue tighten to compensate, and that tension makes pitch harder to control. We fix the breath first, release the tension, and pitch and range get easier.

## What to expect in a voice lesson

- **Discuss your vocal goals:** You'll get some time to go over what your vocal goals are, whether that is to improve your karaoke skills or nailing an audition for your dream role!
- **Evaluation of vocal health:** In the beginning of your lesson, Ashten have you do a few warmups to hear how your voice is currently working and responding to different exercises. This helps determine a good strategy for your voice.
- **Personalized Online Coaching:** We'll come up with a personalized strategy to help you reach the vocal goals you described at the top of the lesson. Plus, we'll apply this to a song you are working on!
- **Practical application:** Once we have reviewed some strategies and exercises that will work best for your voice, we'll apply it to a song you are working on, so be sure to have a song ready that you feel stuck on and we'll see how to unblock your progress!

## Not sure where to start?

Start with a [free intro lesson](https://learn.singwithashten.com/intro). I'll listen to how your voice is working right now, we'll find where the strain is coming from, and you'll leave with a few techniques you can use immediately.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is it normal for my throat to hurt after singing?

Mild tiredness after a long session can happen, but pain isn't normal. It usually means tension is doing the work breath should be doing.

### When should I see a doctor instead of a vocal coach?

A vocal coach teaches technique and doesn't diagnose. See an ear, nose and throat doctor or a voice-specialized speech-language pathologist if you have hoarseness lasting more than two to three weeks, pain when you speak or sing, or a sudden loss of range or voice. Once you're cleared, lessons can help you rebuild healthy habits.

### Can adults improve their singing voice?

Yes. Singing is a skill, not a fixed talent. Adults improve with clear instruction, regular practice and feedback.

### Do online lessons work for vocal health?

Yes. On Zoom I can hear your tone and see your breathing, posture and jaw tension in real time, and you practice in the space where you'll actually sing.

### How much do lessons cost?

Private lessons are 30 or 45 minutes on Zoom, on monthly plans starting at $120/month. For a full breakdown, read [How Much Do Voice Lessons Cost in 2026?](https://singwithashten.com/blog/how-much-do-voice-lessons-cost-in-2026-a-vocal-coachs-price-guide?hsLang=en)
